Timing (how much time is left before the next note is played). A half note means you "wait" longer than a quarter note.

with percussion, it depends on how frequently you want to hear the sound. if you want to hear it continuously through the count, write-in a roll.

You have to listen to the way the melodies are structured, where the "natural" ending seems to be. Is it after 5 beats or somewhere else?

Also, I couldn't get some of Tool's songs if my life depended on it.
