People have jobs/lives. It's better to ask sooner than later so people can get the time off if they need to. It also costs money to be a bridesmaid - so letting them know early also helps in setting aside $$ for dress, shoes, hair, makeup, gifts, etc. Not to mention bridal showers and bachelorette parties. All of this shit takes time and money - and people appreciate fair warning.

Tell as many girls as you can, tell them to save as much money as they can so they can be ready when the time comes for the Bridesmaid Draw.

Then you select 4 maids, and the rest have enough money for AWESOME GIFTS!!!!

When you have a date set you ask. For all you know the engagement may not last till the wedding. What happens if you break it off? Then you asked for no reason and then next time u may end up getting married that person (said bridesmaid) will automatically assume they will be ur bridesmaid and what if you no longer want them to be?
