I get this a lot with newer trance. A track might be really driving and energetic and I'm enjoying it, but it will invariably do the massive build and drop thing with a straining super-melody.

Well I guess haters gonna hate even if it's a shit tune.
It's not even remotely as good as Breeders remix which I remember some DJs play even until this day.
Btw what happened to Protoculture. He used to pull of good shit like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5bE6plB2Ac
Now it's pure Aramada cheese.
Proto sold his soul to Commercialism when he did that remix of Binary and it put him RADAR , Nano records gave him his break as did those in the Psy scene
But he's only doing what every other named player has already done ...
As for the track itself .. the bassline is similar to another production again not by any of those 2 by any means ..

Since Protoculture direction change seems to still be a discussion topic, here is a discussion where he explained why he decided to change his music style: http://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php

I've learned to accept the drop things. What I really, really fucking hate in today's music is the AVB-type of buildups - catchy bassline, catchy melody starts leading in, then there's a build-up/break-down, and you're expecting the melody to explode... but it never does, all you get is a farting bassline with some car horn in the background
Point in case (yeah, older tune, I know)
FF to 5:15. Not the best example, but Armin/Markus play a TON of tunes with breakdowns like this one in their shows.
The Max Graham remix was a great driving tune up until that buildup.
and it's also 3 years old ... I don't think he's done much like this the last 2 years. His latest album (released in 2010) has some decent tracks on it, but already with that album you heard a shift in his productions. I don't think I've heard one track of him I liked after that release

Did they use the "Hey you" sample from "Hey You - The Rock Steady Crew" of 1983 there?
