here's my advice, for someone who is currently in the midst of seeing a new lady friend-

listen to stu. keep your shit clean. i've been caught with my pants down twice with a nasty fuckin apartment from working all night/sleeping all day/being too lazy to clean. bathroom being the worst. the alcohol thing is a good idea too. first date, had no booze, and she came over too late to head to a bar or whatever.

i'm personally kind of an introvert myself, at least lately. i only go out when i feel like hanging out. i'm pretty content with doing shit by myself at the apartment. it kinda sucks at times when you want to socialize, but the benefits of not dicking around with roommate drama and nonsense outweighs all. you definitely need to make some new friends though; it's critical for staying sane.

neighbors, i've not spoken to at all, period. the one next door neighbor i HAVE interacted with (hung out like twice, for like an hour each, and wanted him out before the hour was up both times) was just kind of awkward. it all depends though. my neighbors kinda suck.

personally, my best living situation was living with the ex. other than the occasional times where i wanted to be by myself (but couldn't), it was all gravy.

I've been living on my own for 3.5 years now and I still dig it. So much freedom - you can wank in any room and nobody will tell you off.

To reiterate what Stu already said, definitely always keep your place clean. You never know when you'll have unexpected guests, and because you live alone, yours will be the place that everyone congregates at. And it's not cool, comfortable, or fun hanging out in a dirty shithole.

And definitely always have liquor, as well as weed, in the house. Cleaning is a lot more fun when you're stoned. And yes, candles.

I'm of the belief that it's never a good idea to get too involved with your neighbours. Be courteous, find out the gist of who they are and vice versa, and look out for each other - but don't fuck them or party with them. This is where you live, it should provide some kind of sanctuary from people, and how are you gonna do that if you've gone and become bffs with everyone in the neighbourhood?

As per meeting new people, it should be really easy at school man. When I was in my first couple years (also when I lived alone) I actually had no intention of making new friends, but I became pretty tight with a couple chicks in my class and met lots of new acquaintances in the library and around campus. Basically, don't force it - you'll meet new people and make new friends even if you aren't trying or don't think you want to.

I had a roommate once, for three months, and that was all I could tolerate of living with someone else. Lol.

I can barely tolerate living with my girlfriend sometimes.

I've been living in city by myself for about 9 years now and can say it's a very liberating feeling. At first I can see it being a bit difficult to acclimate but once you find yourself a routine you'll learn how awesome it is.

In regards to your neighbors, here's my story. I live in a front to back brownstone that has been split with one front apartment and one back apartment. We share the same 'entrance' but there is a foyer between the front and back so it's almost like living with a roommate and too close to be 'considered' neighbors. Like you, my 'neighbor/roommate' is female and quite attractive at that. Both of us are socially outgoing to we've both brought home one nighters.

We both choose (and spoke about this) that nothing should go on between us because I personally don't shit where I eat. I think if we ever hooked up it would bring a sort of tension to the living arrangements we have. So essentially we're just really good friends, she cooks for me, we smoke together, we party together, but we never get into bed with one another. Laying on the sofa all good but no direct intimate contact.

With that being said, it's been a fruitful and fun 9 years which now looks to be coming to a end so I'll have to restart this process with another neighbor in the near future.
