What I do find though are these tracks and the way he mixed them are less predictable. I really got sucked in and taken on a ride.

I've been trying to ID a lot of the songs for over a decade. I've collected loads of CD singles, vinyl and mp3 files. I'm posting the singles in a separate singles playlist with links to online stores or discogs info so anyone can buy them online. The singles section is a must-hear list!


I've been into Trance and Electronica since '95 and it's been a real ride seeing how Trance has evolved. The best way I can sum it up is to say that Trance really started out from the 80's underground pop remixes. Those slowly evolved into Rave/Techno and it's evident in the Trance from the mid 90's.

Around 97-98 Trance experienced a huge surge in popularity due to the Internet. Songs from this time period were a very mature mix of Techno and Trance. This time period produced some of the best Trance ever due to the amazing talents of the producers who weren't fame whores (like these current DJs on the scene) and made music purely for the love of it. Epic Trance started during this time as well.

Around 99-2000, Progressive House + Trance = Sasha & Digweed becoming huge influences on the scene.

2001-2003 saw the rise in Melodic Trance and the musical form of a lot of songs became more predictable and established since so many people now had access to cheaper software and in order to make music, a simple grasp on composition was required. This era saw the downfall of Techno's influence on Trance and resulted in a lot of the songs sounding the same.

2004-2007 was definitely the era of "Candy" Trance. Candy Trance is what I've heard many people call the Trance that Armin van Buuren played because the instrumentation sounded very similar, everyone had to have that Rank 1 Super Saw sound and so many people could now pump out Melodic Trance because the formula was tested, tried & true. This period saw the rise of Nu-Electro starting to creep into Trance.

2008-Current saw the scene desperately trying to hold on to the old Candy Trance formulas (and failed). With Nu-Electro's influence, EVERYONE and their mother's sister's uncle started using compressors to achieve the infamous ducking effect that is now used on every single song that is produced. To say that this current music is purely Trance is not correct. The current music is a Nu-Electro/Trance hybrid. Sadly, Trance from this period has become extremely commercialized all forms of an underground sound are defunct. Also, I've noticed that the music seems to reflect the age of the most popular DJs; Markus Schulz is getting up there in years and his music has literally slowed in tempo. If you compare the current tempo of his mixes to those of seven years ago, it's slowed by 5-15 BPM.

Once I get the 98-99 mixes posted, you can all hear the pure talent that was put into the songs from the past and you'll get to experience that same thrilling ride that I did and see how the music evolved.
