Er, you must have a wall at some point, unless you're producing outside (or in front of an open window).

Actually not having a rear wall is preferable - you don't need a rear wall for bass response as such: the driver essentially produces bass towards you with some of the low presence being created by the cabinet itself (aside from the fact the low you go the more unidirectional it becomes but that's too deep for this convo).

What you're talking about is soundstage, not frequency response, but I still don't think that's the problem in your case. It's either the fact your monitors have muddy bass response themselves (MR8's) and that's not letting you hear the low freq properly during producing or you have room problems that are causing the same problem.

IMO the mackie MR8's, while OK, are not that flat or detailed.

They have a big loungeroom behind them.. Yeah it's tempting to upgrade to something better quality with a front port, like focal twins.. lol. but for now i've just nudged the bass boost on them up 2db and will A/B with ATH-M50's next time i'm trying to mix in a sub bass layer, see how that goes.

Got it, but I hope you get that the problem is not about front or rear porting as such; it's about the fact your monitors (regardless of where their ports are) do not give accurate sub frequency representation.

The bass boost just gives you more bass at a particular cutoff and really using closed back headphones will also not give a true representation of low frequency either.

To me, it sounds as if you've got to the point with your productions that you've outgrown your monitors, and in some cases, I've found people's choices (in terms of what they look for in monitors) change as they get more educated and experienced.

This thread made me feel special about me having Rokik krk's, I should have went for the HS80's which are good value for money in that price range!
