Oh, and 2500 calories is not so close to normal American consumption, which I've seen estimated from 3000 to 4000. If American men ate just 2500 calories, most of them would probably maintain weight rather than gaining.

That's the equation for the caloric requirement to maintain a certain weight, so sure, if you want to remain overweight, I guess that does require overeating. Go figure.

Caloric requirement to live at a healthy weight and caloric requirement to continue being overweight are pretty different.

The word "requirement" in that equation is very misleading.

Seriously, I can't imagine how much they pay people to conduct & publish research like this.

Let's write out some specifics, then.

Say 6'0" man, 170 lbs, 25 years old, exercising three times per week. Now plug in the values...

= ( 6.23 x 170 ) + ( 12.7 x 72 ) – ( 6.76 x 25 ) = 1804.5
1804.5 * 1.375 = 2481.1875 calories

Not some fatty, just a six foot guy who weighs 170 and works out a bit.

Fatty

Idk, I don't really count calories, but I'm 5'10, 180 and I exercise 5 days per week, but I don't think I consume anywhere close to 2,500 calories per day.

There's the odd person who has a slow metabolism or whatever, but chances are that you just consume more calories than you think.

Try eating only 2,000 calories a day for a week, counting them out very precisely, and see whether you end up feeling hungry.

I'm curious now. That formula says I should be consuming 2,900 calories per day, which seems like way more than I do.

Zip, I remember making this exact point to you a while ago when you were boasting about your vegan diet, and you started arguing with me. I've yet to hear anyone explain to me how a living organism can maintain a calorific deficit for any length of time without losing bodymass. Endless overweight people have suggested to me that their bodies somehow defy this basic equation.

As I've said before, I've lost 18lbs in about three months consuming absolute junk food. It's not guaranteed to be good weight you're losing, and it's certainly not healthy in a larger perspective, but it clearly works.

This whole calorie and weight loss thing is a mystery to me.

I've been running on the treadmill everyday for about 3 weeks now. My workout is pretty standard 30 minutes on the treadmill, and according to the counter it equals 5K and burns about 300 calories.

After a few weeks of this I've lost a significant amount of weight but is that to say that if I didn't work out at all and just ate 300 less calories a day I would be in the same shape? I find that hard to believe.
