I love his prog-psy side, he really weaves it in and out of the regular trance very well.

Everyone always says "bring ________ and I will come" blah blah blah and those are usually the same people who don't show up.... Just an observation lol

The "real" NYC trance crowd is (to put it in the best and nicest way possible) fickle

Unless you start some sort of landslide poll or facebook group showing proof in numbers most promoters are not willing to take the risk (and still may not even if you do so). There is plenty of risk involved. No promoter in their right mind is going to book someone just because one person requested it

If you really want to to happen you have to prove there's an audience here that will back it. Unless of course you have a venue that already has a solid walk up crowd no matter who is playing.

I 2nd what Eco and Z are saying.

The first show I saw at Glow when I moved to DC was Talla about 2 years ago. He was a resident back in the day too. I highly doubt that guy will ever get booked again in Washington. Why? Because as my boss so eloquently put it, "keeping it real doesn't pay the bills."

It's just a sad truth.

Even Myon & Shane in DC was risky. The new generation of fans want Tiesto, Avicii, Afrojack, SHM, Alesso, Laidback Luke, Fedde le Grand, Kaskade, etc. Carl Cox was packed out and i was ecstatic! They'll still come out for Armin, Markus, Ferry, PvD, ATB and the big trance names, but that's it.

None of those names are cheap. It's actually pretty whack that people will only come out for big names. Fake ass, fair weather fans. I love seeing new DJs. Morten Breum for example - that dude was actually pretty damn ill.

I think the people in bumfuck come out for these guys because they have to. It's the only booking there maybe. And it's way cheaper than booking SH

Even dubstep I don't really think makes too much money, because no one buys drinks at those shows. Look at Fall Massive in DC. They booked Diplo, Moby, Skream & Benga, Armand van Helden, Infected Mushroom, Martin Solveig, Sidney Samson and like 60 others. The reviews said they only did 9,000 people... Ouch.

I dunno - /random thoughts

I always wondered if there might be a way to circumvent the risk with a collective of sorts. For example, proposing a name to book and having people pledge to support it in advance. Then before the contract is signed having said people buy the tickets or send the money upfront (to be refunded if it falls through of course). That way, there would be enough money to fund it even before the DJ is booked. Might cost a bit more for each person and would take some effort to put together - but it would be sweet if it worked..

If someone offered up J00F tickets before a contract was signed and said if the show fell through I'd get a refund, I would absolutely buy them.

J00F @ Santos Party House would be sooooooo awesome. Or maybe a dark basement/warehouse type party.

That's a marvelous idea but most wont go for it unless venue, date, and other details are confirmed. Once all of that is confirmed it better damn well not fall through or it ends up giving you a bad rep or say people buy a ticket, and then end up not being able to make it or another they like better is playing they are still gonna want a refund and thats just going to lead to a big headache for the promoter. The concept itself would make more promoters more eager to book lesser known talent but there would need to be a surefire way to work out all the kinks in advanced and backup plans when shit goes south

I would think of it more as people initially investing in a party to break-even than simply buying a ticket - and perhaps those people would act more like 'shareholders' in the sense that if the party did beyond simply breaking even at the door, the profits would be split (after operational costs) among them according to who invested / paid the most.

I think it would only work as an invested group collective in that sense since there would be no single 'promoter' or 'rep'. It would simply be a lot of people coming together to try and bring out quality talent with a mutual understanding. Of course there would need to be several who organize the logistics - but there's enough of us here that know how I'm sure we could make it work
