I wouldn't focus so much on how long it takes to get to the finish line, but focus more on maximizing your learning and experimentation. EVERY experienced producer or songwriter will tell you the same thing: their first song sucked monkey balls. Two years from now, you will look back on your current song and think damn, that sucked. Just go with it - you've got to start somewhere or you'll never go anywhere.
So, treat your first song as an exercise in experimentation. But, don't become one of those people who gets so wrapped up in unattainable perfection that is paralyzes you - once you feel like you've exhausted the song idea, call it good and move on to another. You can always revisit previous songs later, although I personally believe that you make better progress by continuously pushing new ideas forward, rather than constantly looking backward.

I agree with J.L. Forget about mastering for now, particularly if you don't have a good grasp on compression. Focus on getting solid musical ideas first, then making them sound good.
Where are you struggling with mixing and compression? Have you read the tutorials or any books? If you have specific questions, post them here.

That is the order of importance. #2 after you understand #1 and #3 comes after you understand #2. |
