I was going to thank you lot...

... then I decided to go on and really thank you all

You know, I really I don't understand where you got this idea that I'm a hippie from:

  • I wouldn't resort to homoeopathy under any circumstance, and no hippie would take as many aspirins as I do. If anything I believe the pharmaceutical industry has done more to the development of health standards around the globe than any new age bollocks - although I do think those nutters should be kept as a "marginal industry" in case a miraculous discovery comes from their quarters;

  • Hippies opposed organised religion but meant to replace it with something not in the least problematic. Maybe I should remind you that not only I'm an atheist, I ditched Buddhism the moment I realised it wasn't as sceptical and empirical as I wish it was - if I were a hippie, I'd probably embrace Buddhism with its quirky superstitions because it's part of the anti-establishment in the West. Once again, I defend religion because it needs to be criticised and analysed as thoroughly as possible, and silencing them could make us forget a few lessons we learnt in the past;

  • Hippies were all about free love. I'm engaged to my first girlfriend;

  • Hippies were all about travelling to exotic destinations. I can't stand small cities, let alone bucolic places;

  • Hippies weren't exactly fond of capitalism. Despite its shortcomings, I don't think there's a good alternative;

  • Hippies loved drugs. I don't even know what hemp smells like;

  • I'm sceptical of too much altruism, a trait hippies loved.
In summary, I don't understand what you're on about

Don't think this will ever happen - It's too late for me to become a bitter cynical fart

... huh? If you're really saying that, I don't think you've ever understood my stance regarding religion: I'm an atheist (who works with science, no less!), the only strained relationships I have in my life all derive from failed attempts to convert me, and I dread to think I may have to step inside a church whenever there's a funeral or something similar. How on Earth could I ever perform a "never-ending fellatio of religion"? It just doesn't add up!

I'm an empiricist, pure and simple, and I'm sure we should knock religion the same way we criticise science, politics, and huge breasts. That is, by shaking it repeatedly and seeing if its firm: even if most religious ideas regarding the social and the natural world turn out to be bollocks (and they might well be), we should carefully analyse all of its premises before we pass a harsher judgment - can it really be the case that nothing a religion says can be useful? Given the history of science, that's highly unlikely. Hell, while we're at it, analyse religious believers as well as their beliefs! Let's see why so many people find it so appealing! This, is the proper scientists behave, reason why I've been trying to tell Saganite fanboys to pipe the hell down and stop acting as irrationally as religious zealots - which only makes science look bad. Dismissing bad ideas outright just because it's in a supposedly bad framework is the best way to have bad ideas come back with a revenge... and, really, we've had enough of that already.
