I would say he is giving some bad advice at certain points, average advice that would be common sense to most the other times.

his side chaining over automation is just flat out bad advice

his concept of form making 64 beats for the dj is also bad advice. Not that a track should not be dj friendly, but unlike say in 2000, all the tracks that do well usually have some sort of melodic or motivic material that will get the attention of anyone including djs right away. The days of just a kick and hihat are done.

His hammering of how the top tracks have alot going on is also completely erroneous. The tracks that sell the most are typically the most simple in terms of number of elements. The more you add, the less impact each element has. So tracks that sell have the hook as much as possible in your face with as little as possible in the way.

Although I agree that quantizing hard is not the best way to get a track grooving, the idea of having some macro grid that spans 32 bars is ridiculous. Nobody does it. Not in pop, not in rap.... Drum patterns usually have a phrasing of 2 bars. It is just what the mind can remember in terms of rhythmic tension. ANy more is pointless.

His business advice is antiquated and well kinda sad that he has such small insight on how one can sell their music. But either have a business course or don't bother mentioning it.

again i am just shocked that people are sitting there listening. I mean a producer with 1 year of experience would be kinda pissed that this is what they are paying for. Common sense sprinkled with bad advice is not something you should pay for. This is like something i would expect for troubled youths at the YMCA.

His point was that these tracks have lots of small subliminal changes that keep the track interesting.

Are people having trouble understanding what he's saying?

he argued both. And they are both wrong. Simplicity, the lack of subtle changes that add nothing and detract from the main idea are what people like. IT isn't that i support this, I just think that EDM commercial success is not that different from pop.
