If A, then B
If you go 'EVERYWHERE with headphones ON your head', you would 'look like an imbecile'.
See, I didn't even need to use douchy html coding. |
And you missed my point: I'm saying that, even if you do go everywhere with headphones on your head, then it's none of anyone else's business, much less an excuse to say this makes someone look like an imbecile!

I don't think Lira actually owns Beats by Dre. He said he owns Sony MDR-XB500's but travels with earbuds. |
Just before I move on to System-J's arguments, may this be clear: I didn't know what "Beats by Dr. Dre" was until last month, I've never seen one, let alone worn this polemic piece of... of... what is it made of? Plastic? Carbon fibre? Angels?
If you pay attention to what I said, my argument is this: Whether or not I wear headphones/ear buds/you-name-it in public it's no one's business, and judging a person based on the presence or absence of such an unimportant accessory is probably a sign you care way too much about others.

Now I expect Lira and co to fire back with two protests:
1. "I wear my Dre Beats everywhere and I genuinely love music." Sadly for you, you happen to resemble a much larger majority of fuckwits, and at surface level you will be judged accordingly. Blame that on a demographic of people who want judging only on surface level. I'm sure if we got talking to you in person, we'd realise you aren't actually a fuckwit. Until then, you're cursed by association. |
Actually, if the brand matters this much, I'd say: "What if the person in questions wears their Dre Beats everywhere and genuinely loves it?". It's available in new colours now, according to their website, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone, who happens to be loaded in order to afford many versions of something you guys say is overpriced, wore it simply because it looks good. Hell knows.
I'm more likely to say cursing someone by association is more of a problem than simply having different priorities when it comes to purchasing headphones. I can't understand what makes urban dwellers buy SUV, but if they're happy, I just hope they don't hit my tiny old car.

2. "What's wrong with just using music (and expensive audio gear) as a lifestyle accessory? Everyone has a different interaction with music as an artform." I personally find anyone spending £300 on headphones just to make themselves seem more interesting to be tragically vacuous and the kind of cloying, irritating drone-person I have to navigate day in and day out in order to find the few interesting and engaging people out there in the world. So my irritation with them is a fractal shard of my overall frustration and depression caused by the sense of emotional and intellectual alienation I feel towards the world around me. |
Then isn't it good that you know you can just skip these people and narrow your focus on who's probably more interesting?

Lira, to be fair, your argument is why bother focusing on someone whose thought process is different than yours, but here you are doing it to System-J ;-)
In other words, if they shouldn't care what he thinks, why should he care what you think? |
Hah, good call
Actually, I'm a bit aware of this contradiction (I often ask why I keep debating here: adding my 2 cents is more likely to make me look like more of a hippy than lead to some sort of insight to either side), but I tend to distinguish between 1st hand intolerance (being intolerant of people who are either indifferent or tolerant towards you) and 2nd hand intolerance (being intolerant of intolerance itself).
Besides, I really want to understand what this fuss is all about.
