I'm sure you've all been on pins and needles wondering what my final decision was. I found a guy on KVR who was looking to trade his full version of Wavelab 7 for my Sound Forge 10, so the deal has been done and Wavelab is now happily residing on my computer once again. I love a happy ending. Oh, and this spectral editor is so kickass! I'm glad I didn't settle for the Elements version.

Out of interest what can you do in a standalone editor that can't be accomplished just as easily (and arguably more conveniently) in DAW?

More precise surgery, ranging from filtering/EQ'ing to truncating. I used CoolEdit Pro a while back and there were gizmos in that program I still wish I had access to, now.

Primarily the deeper editing features and better visual monitoring tools, specialized file management and CD creation tools, etc. But, it's not a necessity AFAIC - it's really mostly a workflow thing.

That said, the spectrum editor that I mentioned above is really cool and I'm sure I will use it a lot for cleaning up audio recordings, de-essing, etc. I just tried it out on a sample that had a nice mic stand rumble while the vocalist was singing and was able to make it almost inaudible while preserving the vocals. I've never seen anything equivalent to this in a linear DAW. Check it out:

Bugger, this is my problem, but at least on PC you have a choice of several good wave editors.

That's the one thing I've been missing all this time, since I switched to mac; wavelab.

Bias Peak is buggy as shit, audacity is fairly buggy and the interface/workflow is horrid, and dsp quattro just doesn't have the advanced functions when you really want to get surgical/deep in editing. Cooledit/Adobe Audition was actually pretty great too and that noise analysis & phase reversal cleaning function was a lifesaver back when i worked in radio with 30 min deadlines.

I may end up buying elements but I worried that I'll miss a lot from having owned the full version back in PC land.

I was going as far as to get a crack of wavelab 7 mac (I know, I know - fuck off, it's just to demo it as steinberg in their infinite wisdom doesn't let you demo anything without a shitty dongle) but there isn't even a working crack out there.

Dave, do you know of any side by side function comparisons of elements to full?

It is, and it works just as advertised.

Interesting stuff, but it's not something i'd really need and would just sit there taking up more 'learn me' space I no longer have

I also noticed a lot of background hum in that Wavelab video

LE is good on laptops as you don't need the Elicenser
I use the Full version on my main DAW, since it caters my outboard chain with external FX
