Well, suppose I'm kind of taking for granted that the room is at least decently quiet (i.e. can't hear busses going by etc). I thought when you said room, you meant like shape or treatment etc.
Even having said that, for EDM you're really only ever going to be close mic'ing for the majority of things such as guitars etc,

had a pair of distressors recently. great for room mics/stereo overheads. not really a Pre though, more of a comp/brick wall limiter. do you need them? no. are they nice to have in a recording situation? yep!
