It was compulsory here up to about 10 years ago, i just missed getting sent there but i id have to go trough the physical, the psych exam and the interview. I was in the last generation of high school graduates to have to do that.

Then again 10 years ago the country was still just about 10 years old, we werent part of the EU yet and our but especially the croatian war for independence was still fresh in everybodys mind so it seemd like a good idea at the time for ever male of age to go trough the basics.

I also read that young Germans would just get wasted on drugs a day or two before the medical exam, and wouldn't be allowed to serve because of what the tests showed up That's what I would have done!

House part is true, though.

Yeah, it was very easy to avoid and people did it in all kind of ways. For most it was easier to come up with some silly injury or allergy that do a lot of drugs. But I guess that would've worked, too. I know a guy who claimed to be allergic to peas and beans and didn't have to serve because that's apparently the standard food ration.
It sucks that the civil service cost me a year but it wasn't a bad year, so I'm kinda OK with it.

Isn't this still true in Austria?
My dad had to do military service I know. My cousins avoided it by doing foreign aid work instead. I have dual citizenship and my dad was under the impression that in order for me to retain my austrian citizenship after 18 i'd have to do some service but that's not the case. I believe that I'm free and clear unless I establish a residence in austria and live there for over 6 months

Croatia had it up until about the time we joined NATO. No need for extra soldiers then, just voluntary enlisted soldiers.

I got called up when I turned 18 but since I was living in Australia my grandad just told them I wasn't coming back any time soon so they waved it.

Military was meh. Some cool shit happened but mainly just sucky slave labour. Being picked for the Bus Course was pretty sweet though, so I got my bus license for free, but had to stay many extra weekends on camp so evens out i guess.

Was pretty cool to drive the royal norwegian marching band and their gun throwers to Basel, Switzerland, and be lodged into a 5 star hotel for a week though.
