One very important point that I forgot to mention is that one of prog rock's defining characteristics is that you cannot and should not attempt to dance to it. So, by that definition, prog house would be house music that you can't dance to?

Progressive is a term invented by stoners for stoners who get stoned while listening to other stoners play while stoned. If it featured an organ and/or several Moogs, was 6+ minutes in length, and wasn't verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/solo/chorus/chorus, it was called progressive rock and, therefore, suitable for listening while getting stoned. Progressive house is maybe the same? Don't know, don't care. The end.

A winner is you, Cryo!

It's interesting how this term has lost its original intention, like with so many other terms in so many other fields and subjects. Progressive no longer means progressive. Art no longer means art. Political correctness no longer mean political correctness. Bigotry no longer means bigotry. Justice no longer means justice. Liberty no longer means liberty. Patriotism no longer means patriotism. And so on...

Tired of everyone coming with words, words but no language
I fled to the snow covered island.
The wild has no words.
The unwritten pages is spreading in all directions!
In the snow, I notice the deer's trails.
Language, but no words.

That's my translation of a Tomas Tranströmer poem which fits very nicely in this context.

Sorry if I got a bit pretentious for a bit there.

nobody is over thinking it , Cryo might of lived the era but his memory is old and given the weed he smoked, not very reliable. I on the other hand am hung like a horse.

it was a term used to describe rock musicians that tried to be more virtuosic and out there and its pre cursor was psychedelic rock. It was first used to describe the rock bands in the UK in the early 70s. Some people called it art rock, but progressive rock stuck. They basically tried to turn rock into classical music ergo making it suck balls. IT was awful music, the second a band became prog, they sucked. All prog musicians are wankers and thats pretty much it. The only people that like it are the band, and half rate musicians. Other prog rock musicians think they are too good to listen to other prog bands so ya, basically music retailer level musicians , mostly white guitarists where the only people that listened to shitty lame wanker bands.

Don't forget about the stupid theatrics and overly dramatic posing that all these cheeseballs incorporated into their live shows. Of course, that was more the style in the 80s prog rock scene.

Check out the Irish band "God is an Astronaut". Kinda Floydish in some ways. Some of Devin Townsend's stuff fits that mold as well.

Fuck me with a chainsaw.

The term progressive, when used with the suffix House, has absolutely fuck all do to with any incantation of rock genre naming from the 1970's.

The term was coined in the UK in the early/mid 90's, (various people have claimed they invented the term but mixmag took credit for it and most people who remember that period give them at least credit for bringing it to the mainstream). It related to a strain of house music, that *shock horror* progressed via adding elements and through stepped structural variation. In it's most dumbed down form, it refers to a house track that gradually progressed. Most early progressive house was just about hooks that grew or were added to others.

later it came to mean any house track that didn't fit clearly in to the other genres (i.e. wasn't too deep, not too funky etc).

I'm a youngster and fairly new to the genre so I thought this thread was pretty helpful. Never knew that's what it meant. Good to know.
