When I think of Rack Extensions, Reason doesn't come to mind.

They were testing it with version 6. There's already some Line 6 signal processing, in there, and Reason's new signal processors were developed with the third-party platform. I'm actually kind of impressed with the quality of the Line 6 bass signal processor.

Well it's launched...and I was not expecting the extensions to have such ambitious prices: http://shop.propellerheads.se/

Interesting - Audio Damage Rough Rider RE is $29....but the full VST version is free.

I guess it's because they have to be built from the ground up without any of the usual VST code library to fall back on. Plus, the compliance will be time consuming.

True, and I guess it's cool that they get to make some money off a (pretty good) freebie. I am surprised that they didn't choose one of their flagship products, though. But, who knows, maybe they're just testing the waters first.

I think there might be development issues, and maybe planned freebies have had to go commercial.

I know Urs was talking about major compliance headaches and development being more time consuming that initially planned.

Still, they've got a captive and hungry audience for the initial period.

Maybe it's just good old fashioned piss taking

Good point. But I still can't justify the prices they're asking when there are better full-featured DAWs and plugins available for less.

Even in spite of the arguments on stability, I kinda feel propellerheads have gone the wrong way with this. I think a better idea would have been to see them release their own instruments and devices as plug-ins where people could choose to use them in any DAW of their choice. Personally, I really just don't care for reason's sequencer at all.

True, but they've also got a much smaller market to contend with as well.

I have no idea on the actual figures, but imagine 5000 Reason users vs 50,000 VST/AU users.
