I never said anything about "being hard to find". Finding the music is part of the challenge.

And if you say 'UK-bass-house' or 'UK-experimental-step' I think it's a pretty clear definition of what is meant.

It might be to you, but for someone who doesn't follow that London-centric niche of electronic music, it's probably going to look like two of the most vague and confusing genre descriptions ever, which makes it highly likely that the end result isn't a mix with the sound you had in mind when suggesting a genre.

If you want to be a part of this challenge, you'd do well to think outside of your own element for a second instead of assuming that everyone likes and knows about the same music as you.

I have no clue about techno, but I'm afraid people might not know what to do with "loopy, repetitive and funky techno" and certainly not hit the sound you're after.

Things get problematic when instead of suggesting genres, you suggest a genre's specific sound at a certain point in time, in this case late 90s early 00s before techno had settled fully into minimalism. I think the best way to do this is simply to suggest a genre, and then pitch the kind of sound from the genre you want to the person who eventually will make the mix.

Well, finding music is one thing, asking someone to buy a bunch of expensive records off discogs is another thing. But again, there might be some more easy accessible compilations of that stuff, I've got no idea.

Well, what's the problem with that? I mean if we just throw genre names out there and no accurate descriptions, there's always going to be totally different angles you can take the genre from.

That pretty much defeats the "challenge" aspect of the genre challenge, namely to operate within fixed genre boundaries that are set by the person who suggests a genre, and that you (hopefully) aren't all that familiar with.

My point is, a genre mix can always sound completely different depending on who does it. Like, a Trance mix could try to be as credible as possible or it could just be a full-out cheese mix and it would sound pretty damn different. And I mean even if it's a more ambiguous term like "future garage" there's still some sort of boundary of what you can do.

It would still be a trance mix, just with trance that you think sucks. That isn't the same as giving a person a vague as hell description of a "genre", and that person then having more or less carte blanche as to what kind of music the mix will contain. There's little to no challenge in that.

Should I refrain from mentioning any further genres?

There are certainly a few I'd like to see added, but more because there are corners of the EDM world I feel I'd like to explore than anything else - which kind of flies in the spirit of the whole thing.

You only get to add one to the mix.
