Hehe, agreed. I keep hearing about the Anjuna forums, maybe one day I'll have too much wine and have a visit over there.

I've never been a fan of sylenth1, even though from what I undesrtand you can program some pretty awesome sounds with it; you can do that with any basic vst...and I prefer the simplicity of abletons operator. and when it comes to desiging drawn out textures, maybe fm8, and gladiator.

And with that....i quote this...

Sylenth1 - killer presets for trance guys who like to pretend that they know something about synthesis.

I'm betting it's so popular for a lot of the same reasons the Virus is so popular. Lots of presets and lots of capabilities. But, like the Virus, it can do so much but excels at little. Can it still headline in some great trance tracks? Of course, and it has.

Pretty much this

If you're looking for that twangy, mid rich stuff you hear coming out of a Virus a lot in trance tracks then I still don't think anything sounds as nice.

Among the other synths I've bought and paid for are Massive, z3ta+2, Zebra and Predator etc, all of which I'm perfectly capable of programming. None of them have the same character. Not worse or better, just not the same for that one kind of sound.

I really don't see the point in ragging on something just because it's simple, or because you don't need it.

I really don't get the sound of Zebra for example. It's always come across as a bit sterile to me. I can still appreciate it's abilities though. The only reason I bought it was the promised new distortion section coming in June, and the fact it came up cheap on KVR.

Re: Why is Sylenth so popular?

Sylenth is mainstream because it has thousands of soundsets available. Every "famous" sound designer released a Sylenth1 soundbank, except (ironically) Bigtone, the master.

What I like about Sylenth? CPU efficient and it delivers a descent sound.

When I'm not in the studio and working on my Macbook Pro, Sylenth 1 is nice to have when you don't have access to your hardware synths.

Not exactly the best argument, I mean there's a reason why they started making soundsets on sylenth and not on another softsynth.

its arguably easier & more fun to program than other options and you can get great & massive sound from it. also you can create almost anything you'd need for EDM with it.

so much hate on the synth in here lol, haters gonna hate. i love it myself.

I like using it. Just kinda used to my own formula so I don't use it too much. But pretty much anytime I deploy it, works out great.

vstation came out way before and sounded way better. More verstaile, killer distortion on it, and ya, just one of those great software synths that nobody really got into because the presets sucked.

It also had an additional(or two?) page which kind of sucked. It's more annoying than anything to have to page back and forth.
