L4C: while i would agree time invested elsewhere is a good idea, signing to a smaller record label who does nothing lets you at the very least get pirated which would ultimately spread your music further than giving it out for free to your limited network

and damn geoff, noob. the one word on the internet that just sends me into a downward spiral.

im hurt.

I'm just looking to write music if it's on a label there's a better chance of people hearing that music and I'd love my work to reach as many people as it potentially could. Let's face it you don't write trance to become rich, its a hobby for a lot of us, and if someone wants to help promote my contributions to the scene I'm more than grateful to them.

I would say this might sound weird but there is a smaller chance. Beatport is less accessible, you can't post it or allow others to download for free and restrict your audience to djs.

basically, what most labels do is the equivalent to what studios do when they option something they know will never get made. Sure they release it but the estimated sales is so small that it is like they option your track, and just keep it in a box which is 99% of beatport.

So ya, if you want to be more accessible and get your name out there, a label is not going to do that. Unless it is a big label. And those will go after you. Or the odd chance you know someone that passes your stuff.

I mean if a label can guarantee big dj support, which most can't, or will fudge the stats, then there really is nothing that they offer. If you want djs to play your stuff, i mean it is sort of a chicken and egg thing, they won't play your stuff unless you are good, if you are good , people will come for you. But really, track the djs that will play your track, go to their shows, give them something that looks nice. NOt a cd. A usb key or something with some pretty packaging. Or both. They will listen to it. Being on a promo list is really not a good way to get played. Because if you are good ,, you will get played. The promo list doesn't encourage djs to play your track. These are all old tools people use to sell you the concept of a label. It is snake oil most of the time.

Maybe also see what else is doing the charts, I'm not saying to copy them, but at least get your tracks up to the same production level as them would help you a looong way. Im not saying your music's utter shite, I quite liked Clubbed to Death actually, but they do sound a bit dated, especially the Dario G remix..

Have you written the whole melody for Clubbed to Death or have you nicked it from some classical piece?

why not just send labels some original work. If it turns out fine there´s a chance they want you to do remixwork later on.

when you remix a tune that remixes Elgar, you don't have to call it clubbed to death.
