John O'Callaghan was last at Stereo on Dec 2nd, 2011 and he was fantastic. When I suggested JOC for Stereo I was thinking of having him at around the same time. Meanwhile there's Leon/Ferry that can be booked. At least those are my personal wishlist DJs for Stereo.

Montreal was filled with EDM talent that night with Oakenfold playing at Arena + Laidback Luke/Bennasi at the New City Gas. Was very happy to see what a sold out Stereo night looked like because even though the place was packed there was still enough room to dance and breathe.

Loved the night had a great time. I was very excited to hear Markus sound coming out of Stereo's speakers but i have to agree with his set being predictable or having a moment of ''WOW what did he do just there that was AAwsome'' Nonetheless I had an awsome time and would do it again.

Awesome set, bit of something for everyone. If you wanted hard, dark, twisted and sinister, he delivered but if you wanted epic and melodic, classic trance, those tracks were included too.

One of the hardest working djs who gets it, imo. He's at all the festivals (was spinning at a festival at Soldier Field only hours after Stereo) but as mentioned earlier, definitely seemed to appreciate the opportunity to test out tracks he probably couldn't fully play at that festival or say, the cheesy Marquee, where he is a resident.

Props to Stereo for relaxing its rules on cameras and glowsticks, speaker dancing, etc. Good crowd, young and enthusiastic, though it could have used more than only two or three hot chicks

As for Malek's set, it was a bit too underwhelming I thought. Obviously you don't want to upstage the headliner but one also has to not go too deep in the other end either. Markus really had to pick us up from the dead, imo.

From his twitter feed:

Montreal + 7 hour set = win. Merci beaucoup! @StereoMtl

OMG!! (((STEREO)))!!! Details later. aghhhhhhh!

Thanks Montreal. That is why you are 1 of my favorite cities in world. Everyone needs to make a road trip here next time. On way to Chicago.

Amazing energy all 7 hours! RT @JessBertrance: @MarkusSchulz On our end it was epic slaying but on yours? Did u feel the stereo crowd?

Youre right Spin. My biggest concern was to not upstage the headliner which ended up with a lack of energy during my set... I guess it wasnt my best day at the office...

you had some very very good tracks but opening for a guy with his status must be very intimidating. I only caught half your set, loved the first 30 mins, great prog, great flow but when you went downtempo for Markus, the place went on reset again, the dark lighting didn`t help either.

Thanks for the post, shows you have thick skin and good character (which you need in this biz) and everyone left the place happy. To overwhelm the dj would have been worse, imo. I have some sets from you from before and i can say you're talented.

This is could be a great debate actually, why should the opening dj restrain himself? just common cutesy?

RA had an excellent article a few years back on the subject called "The Esoteric Art of the Opening DJ"

I don't give a fuck if you play trance or beebop, when I'm at a show, I want to feel like the artist is trying their best to deliver what they're passionate about. And the only thing that inspires me more than seeing someone bust their fucking ass trying their hardest to play to the best of their abilities, is someone that can put their personal aspirations aside, especially on a huge night like that, for the greater goal. You said it yourself, you were trying not to upstage the headliner and I have been in the exact same position as you, at the exact same venue with most likely 10% of DJ Experience you have. Trust me, I know what it's like. You had that thought of not overshadowing Markus running through your head the whole night and it probably started fucking with you, but you realized that no one is there to see you, they're there to see markus. I wasn't there on that night, nor do I ever go to the club on prog/trance nights but you have earned yourself a new fan. please inform me when you play next.

Trance is not my cup of tea, but an honest & self-critical artist is.

cheers,

Michael
