How important? It was to me. I fooled around a lot and dated a lot of guys til I was 17, then started a long relationship which developed beyond oral and I gave up the v-card.
Sex without love is possible, passion and desire have a great deal of influence, especially while doing drugs/alcohol, although it doesn't especially feel as good the next day.
Resisting is a matter of making the choice. One can wait as long as necessary. The most important thing is to not give into pressure, either from friends or your partner, it has to be mutual agreement. That way it works and no one feels used/abused.
That said, I will admit that I am not sorry or ashamed for having sex before marriage, actually, I think that it made me more prepared to commit to a permanent relationship. My husband is perfect for me, I know that because I experimented with a lot of dudes who were not perfect until I found him. We have been married now for 10 months and are as happy now as the first day of our marriage.
