My experience suggests that most people who use compression do so improperly and often do not understand how it works and when it should be applied. Also, in many cases where compression is used more accurate and effective techniques (such as vol automation) can be applied in order to achieve the same (or better) results. I've learned first-hand from a mixing/mastering engineer for a reputable, successful label who has been writing music for decades now (and started in the days where digital audio didn't exist) that compression should be used very sparingly, if ever.
