Honestly, I think that's what California rolls are made for. It's like the gateway dish into the world of sushi. Once you're ok with the taste of California rolls, graduate to some salmon rolls. Then onwards and upwards!
I don't know if it's an acquired taste, because I loved it ever since I had my first spicy tuna roll.
