I think what happens is that the guys that can't handle the schedule quit early or never make it big, so the guys that are left are naturally more resistent. If you'd take random people from the street, their body would probably break down within a year of touring.

• Being able to shut down in short stretches of one, two or three hours whenever they can get it.

• Having the ability to sleep on planes, trains and boats even (this one is a must)

• Only eating light meals before a gig.

All this should guarantee good performances in the most adverse of conditions. Then after it's over, and as Diggers mentioned it's essential to take time and recharge after strenuous multi-day stretches of gigs.

For the more fortunate, traveling with an assistant/road manager who can handle all of the details, and bringing a tech in charge of setups and sound checks makes life much simpler. (at a steep cost)

And for those truly lucky few who belong to the über-successful creme-de-la-creme where money is obviously no object, flying on private jets will easily shave three to four hours if not more out of every day's tedious travels and eliminate the problem and stress of lost luggage, which means more time to rest, or party... LOL

(and yes, as others mentioned the rush of playing for a crowd usually overrides the tiredeness, at least for the first two hours... once it get to marathon lengths everything changes.)

Mark Anthony is accurate with the before and after. He was probably a boss in the 90's. I'm not sure if his resignation was a marketing scheme.

i have played a gig with 39º+ temperature 102 Fahrenheit i believe, basal is 36.5 to get an idea and i was even chating with the promoter for an hour outside the venue feeling like shit but smiling afterall, then i played for 2 and a half hours just drinking red bull without ice... and it went surprisingly well, i completely forgot about being tired or fever...

Then they that are a lot more used than me surely can play a gig without even sleeping.
