Maybe this is a digression, but English has a generic, commercial quality to it that no other language has (to my ears). It lacks an ethnic identity, and sounds like a global creole/patois. If it were any other language in that example, I know I wouldn't get this feeling.

It's not the only language I can understand, so I'm sure this isn't a bias from growing up with it. U.S. culture feels so unnatural even though I grew up here. Everything about the South and the Midwest seem more like fiction than reality, more like a fad than the genuine identity of a people. What do the cultures of Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Japan, etc. have that U.S.A. lacks?

I think German sounds rather jolly and upbeat, while French sounds dreary and depressed. Dutch is of course English backwards.
