Firewire is being abandoned slowly and there's no point buying an expensive thunderbolt drive to run it via a FW adapter as the speed advantage of TB will be bottlenecked down to FW speeds.

Also FW is a terrible idea for live as all it takes is for someone to knock the cable out and it could fry both your drive and your computer's FW bridge.

For using in CDJ's, just get a large USB thumb drive. All the 500gb ones on ebay are fake. There are some real 500gb ones floating about from known names but they're overly expensive.

I would just get 128 or 256gb drives (around $100) from the big names and leave it at that. That's more than enough music to play for a week straight in .wav.

I'm talking about using the Thunderbolt port on the laptop and running that into firewire or usb port on the HD via adapter.

Good advice guys, thanks! Will factor this in to my decisions.

i think Rann pretty much mentioned the main issue. Hot plugging firewire can ruin your drive just once. So imagine the cable gets knocked, hardrive no more.

Honestly, if you are going to be serious, buy 2 SSD drives, 2 enclosures, USB. When playing live, you should really have 2 of everything.

If i was djing,

2 identical laptops. 2 identical soundcards. controllers don't really tend to fail right then and there. And i would always have a backup cdj.

If you've ever done enough live work, what ever can go wrong will go wrong. You will become paranoid. Ask Rann about his little hard-rive incident. Some people lose their career over this kind of stuff,. Luckily Rann blamed it on the mexican.

If you are running on an affordable budget is ok but things in europe aren't like in the US. Till you have ~30 years you are poor as fuck and living with your parents (exceptions can be made though).

2x laptops means 2000$ x2 because ofc you'll be using a decent mac.
2x sound cards it depends but let's say an audio4dj card which is 200$
2x hds would be around 500$...

Thats a lot of stuff for that price i can buy a 2nd hand car.

While if i bring my cds i spend 50$ in vrigin cds or now with the usb stick... 0.

I've only had an incident with a cdj once, apart of several "minor" incidents if you only have 2 cdjs in the club it's their fault, serious venues at least have a cdj plugged in just in case (for example 2x cdj 2000 and a cdj 1000 mk3 on a 3rd channel).

RANN, is the same true of firewire audio interfaces?

ive heard the protocol is more seamless for audio but the cables are fiddly as ffuck, fw 800 the worst

any cable suggestions for fw?

my motu ultralite mk3 has usb + fw, for live would usb be better? only disadvantage is it isnt bus powered with usb

ive fried two firewire soundcards and one harddrive, hence my above recommandations about ditching all things firewire-related! yes it has better speed and a different way of checksum calculations and therefore faster and then better suited for lets say 12 ins/outs. but for djeing where u need max 6 outs (3*stereo?) and no ins usb is way more stabile.

seamless is relative. I do believe reading an article by rme describing the extra overhead of using firewire but it wasn't really noticeable. But the hotplugging issue is still there. Ruined a friends motu by accidentally unplugging the cable.

So ya, for live work, don't use firewire.
