The only argument that abortion is murder falls on two general claims:
1. That a fetus is equal to a conscious human being. I have seen no evidence that supports this whatsoever. This typically gets broken down into First trimester, Second trimester, and Third trimester ratings, with the Third trimester being deemed "equally human" by the anti-choice crowd. Again, I've seen no evidence at all that supports this, and Third trimester abortions are extremely rare and their occurrence is more to do with complications that threaten the life of the mother. Her life takes precedent, always.
2. That because a fetus is a potential human being, it must be saved. This of course is totally irrelevant to whether or not the fetus is a conscious being and is deserving of the same care as a birthed one, instead, it rests on pseudo-ethics. But since there's no actual set-in-stone boundary as to where you define "potential for human life", you can logically extend that to a zygote, or even individual sperm and eggs. Do we make contraception illegal? Will masturbation be considered genocide? If a woman has her period and doesn't become impregnated at puberty, is she guilty of mass murder?
Think I'm being ridiculous? We're having open political discussions about whether or not a girl who is sexually violated against her will should be forced, against her will, to carry out a pregnancy. I couldn't come up with a more unfathomably abhorrent point of view in my worst mood. And yet, somehow, someone was able to top that:http://www.theatlanticwire.com/nati...-rights/56118/#
