Unless shes really really hot.

Given my marriage, I don't think the hotness factor changes anything any more

Well that depends doesnt it...if she would be hot enough for a married straight girl to go "Damn! even i want to hit that", you might just have an opening

How French of you

I just checked and (thankfully) I can't find any of my teachers on Facebook.

Generally, I grant my teachers their privacy, for I can imagine they've had their share of students that, on purpose or not, have tried / have gotten too familiar with them. If I was a teacher, I can think it wouldn't boost my credibility among the students to hang out at a bar with them, unless the students and the teacher became exceptionally closely knit professionally. Stuff like that could be awesome, but taking a class to have a beer and remaining "above" them the whole time, without losing your credibility and compromising your position as their teacher could be difficult, at least for me.

I usually become somewhat familiar with my teachers at classes, but seeing them in public, a nod and a "hi" is all we usually exchange. Granted all my teachers, excluding a couple of exceptions, are 40-55 years of age so they're quite "experienced" and propably don't have any interest in knowing you or interacting with you after class. Not surprisingly, the younger ones usually are more laid-back and like to interact more.

I think the teacher-pupil Facebook friendship -thing is more suited for, say, middle school, where teachers are much more than just teachers for those kids (well at least that's my experience). I think it's heart-warming seeing a middle school teacher like and comment their pupils status updates, but in case of higher education I think it's quite the opposite

Drunk post, so excuse me if I've gone full-Darkarbiter on you or been ierrelavant.

Thanks I guess I accidentally picked up some.of their mindset and/or national customs while learning the language. Not that i mind

And there you go, the precedent is set, it has been done before so when a drop dead gorgeous student walks into your classroom (and lets face it, you live in Brazil, it's bound to happen eventually) go for it...for science! of course.

I think it is the opposite. It is far more suited for upper education where students are expected to have a better grasp of privacy, relationships and responsibilities. Middle School relationships are certainly frowned upon by many, even if administrators monitor teacher activities.

I can understand why some students would want to continue in contact with a certain favourite teacher even after they go on to another school. But in lower levels the risks are higher, even if you don't take into account the intentions of the teacher in said relationships.

You would have to be in teacher-mode with the students you are interacting with in facebook. That's obligatory for lower level. I've know teachers from as early as elementary school having students as friends in the network, some go as far as sharing everything. But sharing everything about you, the person, to a little kid is risky. So, if you must share something via facebook, you have to use a list/filter (something some teachers are clueless about). Don't share everything.

Talking about college and universities, I've come across professors-mostly young to the field- who do befriend their students. Why? Well, the reason is obvious. Students are looking to bribe a professor as the end of the semester approaches and their grades are not looking good. Others, whether students or professors, just want that amorous relationship or just the sexual one. It happens. I wouldn't bother anyone talking about the details of some but they are likely. I don't blame the network though. If a student or professor or both have intentions of building a sexual relationship, he/she can do it by other means of communication.

To answer the question of the OP, the students should be as close to the teachers as law permits it (talking about students below the age of 18). For professors, students can get as close as they want. There is no law against it. Both sides have a mature view on all aspects of a relationship.

Are... are you saying the students I have on Facebook only added me because they want the full throttle hands on Lira bonking experience?

I'm slightly disturbed and confused because a considerable number of straight AND gay men added me...

Well, you are quite an attractive man Lira, so it is likely. Being married also raises your level of sexiness. There's nothing like a forbidden man.

Forgot to add: There are a big number of students with good intentions and genuine interest at all levels with professors and teachers. They are the majority. I just happen to know more of the ill-intentioned type.
