I've never had a cup of coffee in my life.

I'm almost envious. You could have a cup of coffee right now, and it would be your first time ever.

I drink approximately 48oz of coffee per day. Black... must be black. I prefer Sumatra Mandheling or Yirgacheffe; however, I'm also a big fan of Monsooned Malabar (particularly as a morning brew) and Yemen Mattari (a desert coffee normally).

I used to find coffee disgusting as a teenager, until a restaurant at school started offering it for free. As we say in Portuguese, "rock out if it costs nowt", and I got used to the taste.

Although Brazilians don't have a traditional coffee culture like the Viennese and/or the Italians, we do drink a wee bit of coffee every day at work, and once again I drank some because it was free of charge. When I went to Japan I found out I wasn't a freak for liking cold coffee and then - bam! - I found several ways of drinking gallons of coffee every single day (usually cold).

How expensive are these brands/blends/types of coffee compared to the ordinary coffee we can buy in a supermarket?

Also, has anyone found a capsule coffee thing they liked? I was told most taste horrible.

For the Mendheling and Mattari I pay $11/lb (there is a great roaster about a half hour from my office with very good prices); however, in most small coffee houses they run about $14/lb. The Malabar and Yirgacheffe are harder to come by but normally I can find them for $12 - $16/lb. Most of the normal super market blends here will run $9-10/lb. So they are more expensive, for sure, but well worth it if you like your coffee. Given how much coffee you Brazilians grow I have to imagine the price difference would be much higher as I have to believe your domestic beans are pretty inexpensive, yes?

A bit, yeah. I pay 2~3 dollar per pound, so that's way cheaper, although I assume the quality is proportional to its value.

That's cheaper than I thought though.

I recently ended my long journey transitioning from 2-4 Red Bulls a day (after growing up on 4-6 Cokes per day) to drinking my coffee black. I made the change in an attempt to live a healthier lifestyle, and I don't regret it at all.

I started in December 2010 trying to ease myself out of a particularly bad hangover. I knew that caffeine would help, but the additional chemicals in Red Bull would make my headache worse, and possibly lead to a migraine, so I went upstairs to use my parent's Kurig coffee maker to have a full cup of coffee for the first time in my life. I added 2 level teaspoons of chocolate milk mix, and by the halfway point of the cup of coffee, my headache had disappeared. I never looked back after that.

Through 2011 I cut back my Red Bull consumption, and made the transition from Cafe Mocha, to Double Doubles, to Single Cream 2 Sugar, to "normal" (all the while moving from medium roast to dark roast), and this past September, finally drank my first cup of black coffee (Reunion Island Privateer Dark). It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be, and I've never added cream or sugar to a coffee since.

Interesting point to note. I was starting to get kind of fat for the first time in my life (165 pounds, very little muscle) and was starting to worry about whether I was going to turn out like my dad, with a permanent pregnant-look. But since going black, and without any additional dietary changes or increase in work-out activity, I lost 20 pounds over the course of a month and a half. To be fair, I should probably start putting on some muscle mass, because I'm a gangly fuck right now.
