An african pope who's had first-hand contact with AIDS might have a different view on contraception. That's about the only thing that's on stake in this election. My guess is it will either be Cardinal Scherer of Brazil or Cardinal Ouellet. Schere, being Brazilian, is appealing because he is from Latin America (where the most Catholics reside), he's at the younger end of the normal age range, and he has experience in Rome as prefect for the Congregation for Bishops (meaning he is well connected in the church). Ouellet, is appealing because he is Canadian (there is presently a big appitite to go non-European), very well connected and regarded in Latin America where he spent significant time teaching and he is president of the Pope's counsil for Latin America, incredibly well connected in Rome where he is the presently the prefect for the Congregation for Bishops, he's right in the prime age range for a pope at 68 and speaks six languages. Either of these two men seem a very likely choice for the cardinals to make and would be well received with most Catholics.

I was very surprised to hear that Cardinal Collins of Toronto is in the running, as he was only made a cardinal last year. I would suggest that Cardinal Collins has a real shot at being a dark horse in this race, as he has some pretty strong chops as a biblical scholar, he's the right age, and is incredibly charismatic. Maybe the stronges thing Collins has going for him is thst he is incredibly media savvy and is known for delivering motivating and rousing homolies. If the church is looking for someone to improve their outward image he is THE GUY. Working against him though is his lack of experience in Rome and that he has been very open about the sex-abuse scandals and publically critical of the mishandling of same. I should note here that while there are probably better candidates I'm pulling for Collins (it would be really cool to be able to say I met the pope).
