When I had an office job, we had United Health.

Since I live in Canada I obviously have pretty awesome coverage, hah. But the system is painfully slow here, my mom waiting about 4 months for an MRI after she fractured her knee only to reveal she needed surgery which would take additional 2-3 months waiting. She eventually paid for a flight to Germany to get it done in a matter of weeks and the procedure cost her about $2,000. Whats ridiculous about the health care system is that my friend who also mangled her knee in a skiing accident got an MRI in ONE week. Its great that its free here to a degree through taxes of course, I don't mind the paying through taxes for it but the system is really fucked. I hope I never get a serious health problem.

I have some benefits through work though from Sunlife Financial, most of the standard stuff; $2,000/year coverage on dental, $250/year on vision (lenses or frames or both), 80% off medication, etc. It's great but I rarely ever use it. I do need gum grafting done as my gums have receded and my two front bottom teeth hurt a little, so the dental benefits will cover most of it (surgery for it is usually around $1,000 - $1,500).

I've heard horror stories about people waiting months and months, but my experience was actually really fast.

I was in the hospital for about a month because of a neurological condition that was affecting my nerves and muscles on the left side of my body.

My first week in the hospital I had 2 MRIs, 3 EMGs, countless examinations, a quick diagnosis and treatment. The other 3 weeks were spent doing rehabilitation and balance exercises.

The trick here in Quebec is to get into the hospital, at which point they'll test the fuck out of you and get you healthy, but I agree that the outpatient services in Canada can be painfully slow.

That's why we over here for many years have a system were everybody has basic health insurance. The more you earn the more you pay. Think about half is paid through the employer. Costs go up, people get older, equipment gets very expensive. But at the time you're 65 or so, you're maybe happy with it. You also pay for the older people while still being young.
