Dogs have fine memory, but as I understand it, its contextualized entirely different from how a human would contextualize memories (which isn't surprising).

Do you think dogs have good working memory? Would a dog remember its previous owner(s) without coming in contact w/ them? Obviously, if you approach them, they might recognize your smell; but, can dogs recall the past?

When I went on vacation for a month my brother says my dog fell down the stairs about 3 weeks in when he heard a car drive by that sounded like mine and tried to rush to the door. Now, hearing a familiar sound may be a little bit analogous to smelling a familiar scent, but I would imagine my dog still remembered that the sound meant *I* would be walking into the house soon (well, actually it wasn't my car, but you get the point). I think that would indicate that a dog is capable of remembering specific people without seeing or smelling them to jog their memory, that they can contextualize other, more abstract memories and experiences to remember people and things.

Yea a strong ability to contextualize input is pretty much required in a pack animal. They are highly social animals.

I remember when I was younger I had somehow forgotten my key to my house, but knew that my parents were coming home soon, so I sat down on my patio (in the backyard) to read a novel I had. My cats had been outside and joined me on the patio, until they both perked up their ears and ran to the front of the house. About 10 seconds later I heard a car approach, shut down, and doors open, as my parents were home. Fucking cats could pick out our car's engine from a block away, when I couldn't even hear any car

Also, voted. Death of an animal is a damn sad thing
