What you have to look at is the motivation and social justification people having in carrying out something like this. Its a two-fold problem where fairly much all the major religious groups wholesale endorse in their teachings that women are inferior to men and the way many societies and cultures have this general condonement of aggravated violence as a problem solver.

So when you get a person carrying out violence, the first step of doing it is diminished because its considered acceptable in society. Post act completed it has the guilt factor diminished because its considered acceptable practice to a higher power than them, which will assuage whatever miserable and twisted reasons brought it about in the first place.

Oh don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to excuse such vile incidents. One doesn't have to be a scholar to get that if for millennia you indoctrinate half the population into viewing the other half as nothing more than property, and what's more, you teach them the ways that the ultimate authority, god, prescribed to deal with misbehaving property, you're going to have a society with a few problems. And by a few problems I of course mean, the systematic repression, oppression and violence of and towards said half of the population. A thoroughly fucked up situation, we can all agree (unless we have any imams here that would like to argue otherwise.

The problem I had with the quoted post was, that it said that even in the regions of the world not as fucked up as the middle east (or fucked up in other interesting and fun ways at least) the number of victims based on gender is different by miles. For better or for worse in certain parts of the world we live in much more equal societies, something that is reflected in many ways, one amongst which is the male on female and female on male violence and assault rates which are not exactly half to be fair, but not that far off either. Certainly not off by miles though.
