Well it sounds like your mindset would have done quite well in there.

A common missconception is that they completely filter out certain groups but that's not actually true. They mostly take a bit of everybody, even the odd group of dumb swedish blondes. Whether you get in doesn't really depend as much on who you are but rather on if they want more of your type inside right now. They just give people that 'we don't want you here' look because they like fucking with people or something. I don't think Berghain is the beacon of diversity that some people seem to propagate but it's better than most other clubs in the city and infinitely better than the queue outside.

This is for saturday night by the way, from sunday morning when the queue is gone you probably have a better shot at getting in than not.

tresor usually has great lineups, but i really don't like the crowd most of the time. if you don't like to elbow fight with hoards of coked-up spanish backpackers, you should wait until 05-06 until going there. that's when they usually leave.

if everything else fails, there's this terrible place called matrix near warschauerstrasse. they're open until 07 every night or so. i've never been inside, but i've stayed twice at the hotel on the opposite of it. pretty much the mirror image of a standard swedish/finnish cruise ship. terrible top 40 music, lots of people crying, drinking, screaming and pissing.

Matrix is pretty good but if you want the real hardcore real experience go to Qdorf. It's actually the oldest running and biggest club in the city and famous countrywide for it's 'sophisticated' crowd...

And the sound at Tresor was seriously bad the last time we where there. They might have fixed it but I haven't been since so I don't know. I might go in a few weeks to catch Peter Van Hoesen's liveset though.

Why does this policy exist? It pisses me off. I really to visit Berlin and go clubbing, but the idea of flying 800 miles only to be turned away at the door puts me right off.

Self-preservation. Honestly, if Berghain were to open their door policy at this point, the place would turn into utter trash within a month. Heck, even if they wanted to they couldn't let everyone in just in terms of space. You have no idea just how many go damn people want inside that building. Also it's a silly idea to queue on saturday anways. Queue out of the ass. From like 9am there's no queue and most people get in. I started going on sundays this year and never had a problem with a door.

Clubs that aren't Berghain generally have a more easygoing door policy.

Why not just sell tickets like any other club?

Pretty sure their attitude leans strongly against selling tickets. I think its done in the spirit of preserving the spontaneity that is sadly all too absent from club nights these days, where ticket sales dominate to a large extent.

Door policies are super cool and totally fall in line with the clubbing ethos of acceptance and unity.
