I should note, actually, that in many (if not all) schools, while a D is technically a passing grade (as aforementioned), it will not fulfill a student's major's requirements. EG if there was a major on Bird Photography and one of the required classes was "Bird Shooting 102: Avoiding Bird Shit" and a student got a D, they would either need to re-take the class or possibly need to change their major.

It used to go all the way down to G when I studied GCSEs, which included E.

I'd pull my hair out if I got a D in bird photography...

I had no idea everybody had such different grading systems. Why don't you use the metric system?

In elementary here it was NI through E until I think around grade 6? NI = needs improvement, S = satisfactory, G = good, VG = very good, E = excellent. Then we moved onto regular A through F grading. In HS through university we got a number/percentage grade. HS would give the percentage along with the letter grade...the number obviously to break down how the letter was given.

Yup, pretty much. 10 was awesome, 9 was okay, 8 was disgraceful, and anything lower than that would bring about serious consequences at home.

So, yeah, there was nothing satisfying about numbers

Over here 1-10 and most important 6 = enough, 5 = just not enough.

Edit: actually we even got one decimal numbers and 5.5 average was enough to get a 6.
