Fan: Hey Markus why did you add summertime sadness during your set in florida?

Markus: Its was one for the haters. I'm trying to stick to the sound of progressive.

what??? it's every DJ's duty to appease the crowd. DJ plays for the crowd not himself. What good is playing stuff the DJ themselves like if crowd hates it?

this is the weirdest comment in a while

There is supposed to be a compromise of music being played based on a few factors such as venue, time, crowd, and dj. Djs should nit have to sacrifice their integrity and taste to appease a shitty crowd that wants all pop or cheese. That is why there is a compromise.

no... do you goto a restaurant and order a burger but they give you tofu burger and accept that's a compromise because the chef is a vegan?

venue/time/crowd are just indicators/variables a DJ is supposed to consider to determine what they play..much like serving bacon and eggs in the morning.

In the end, the chef's job is to please the customer..if I want a burger..you give me a burger..not compromise with a tofu burger..if i want bacon and eggs at 4pm and cheesecake for breakfast..that's what you serve me.

DJ's main job is to please the crowd..not have a hollier than thou attitude and play what they themselves only want to play. if they want to do that..they can play at home with no crowd.

I understand what you are trying to say but it is still a little different when comparing a dj to a burger, like you did in your other response. I think that yes, you want to please the crowd but by picking a track within the arsenal that you have selected based on what you like. In other words, when searching for tracks to play at a gig, I always look for music that I like, to make sure I enjoy myself while playing.

If I don't like what I'm playing, it will translate to the dancefloor. But I always have music ready for any given situation; if it's a packed dancefloor or a floor with only 10 people out there, I'm playing at 10pm or 1am. No matter what, I'm playing music that I enjoy. If you are playing a track simply because you know it will get a response because it's what is "hot" right now but you don't like it yourself, I'd ask the dj to question why they are up there and what got them interested in djing in the first place.

Edit: As for why Markus plays what he plays, I'm not really commenting on that. I'll never know.

I see where your coming from but your example didnt resonate with me. Ive been to plenty of restaurants, both upscale and downscale that offered a very limited selection of food, its because these venues specialized in that particular dish. For example, Beaumarchais in Chelsea NYC, you get whats on that menu and nothing else. So if you want a burger, then tough luck, they dont serve them.

As far as music is concerned, lets use the hypothetical example that a popular club is billing an event as an "old throwback trance event". Now if the crowd there is a majority new heads who prefers mainstream tracks that they can sing too, do you expect the dj to discontinue playing "real throwback trance" music just because the crowd doesnt enjoy it. The answer is yes and no, mostly no. There needs to be a compromise between what the dj is known for playing, what the venue billed the event as, and to some extent the crowd.

This reminds me of a particular instance in which DJ shadow booed off the stage once for not playing "clarity and other popular manstream songs" at the time. Who's at fault here? I say fuck the crowd, they should have known what Dj shadow;s musical niche was before coming and if they dont enjoy it then they can get the fuck out.
