OR MAYBE the Swedes found a way to churn out zombie tunes which brainwash the masses! i heard that if you play "I could be the one" backwards it says "Soon, we will have your brain!" in Swedish.

he makes really catchy hits, and what he's doing is pretty original. He's, with the help of black people, finally conquered the last truly white art form - the very theme songs of the Confederacy has been taken by their former slaves.
The merge of house, rap and country is one that in theory shouldn't
work, but with swedish craftsmanship it actually does.

As for people copying him - there's maybe 5% of the human population that has true creativity, most are just parrots. Monkey see, monkey do.
Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and if you can't do, then copy. Neither Avicci, nor deadmau5, are even notable cases for this, people have been copying and tweaking musical ideas since a rather long and somewhat musical belch was accidentaly let out by an unsuspecting cavemen, which spawned a night filled with musical burps.
People copied the Beatles, people copied the Stones, any success story spawns imitators.
It's the very same effect that spawns copycat killers, except it's far more prevalent as we don't jail people who make unoriginal and generic music, albeit the case could be argued that we indeed should.

I was out last night at dinner and speaking to one of the top managers for major DJ talent (and by this I mean they manage several top tier names in both commercial house and trance).

He said it's all just about the sell-out; many big names saw that EDM has exploded in the USA and they want a slice of that $200k-per-set pie.

He told me that me that one person in particular was about to quit the DJ career as his brand was just diminishing over time then he realized he could make millions by just selling out and making music that was far less meaningful and far more basic. He was going to get out anyway and he said this will be his golden parachute as he's pretty much conceded that after this particular ilk of music, there will be no where to go. He recons those making this music now, better pull every penny out of it that they can, as they won't be able to get a gig when this wave of lowest common denominator dancepop subsides.

Apparently, one person in particular (member of a group) is slightly freaking out over it, as his cohorts never really had that much of a career before and they've made millions, but he wants to do other things (like deep house and tech) and he's terrified that no one will give him the time of day or that he's pigeonholed for his decision to sell out.

The guy I was speaking to said he's sick of it as it's not about music. It's about radio play and money.

He said if you play a recording of the 10 big names commercial house now, you literally could not identify who was who. Aside from them playing more of their own tracks (and hence a way to identify) there is simply no differene, and that is one of the reasons this breed will die a quick death.

Good riddance. And yes, I fucking hate avicii (not him, the music, because it's fucking shite).

Love reading your posts Rann, you should open a blog.

I don't mind Avicii that much but i'm dying to know when will Electro House die? when will Tommorrowland die? when will Dubstep die? i wish there was an hour long show narrated by Morgan Freeman with exact scientific estimation on when and how will this all finally happen.

I don't think electro will ever die as long as France is on the map.
You think it's dead and all is left is a ghost that's ravishing the american plains, and then BOOM! The God that is Quentin Dupieux drops this monster that within ten seconds of hitting play has totally redefined the sound of electro.

Cus it's definitely electro house, but it sounds old in a new way, and like how he blended wobble bass and swing melodies in Flat Beat he pulls in elements of contemporary music styles. It's what disco and dubsteps unholy lovechild would sound like if you were outside the club puking from a too heavy e-rush. It's now even that new of a sound, more of a refinement, or perfection, of an existing sound.

The farty bass that has been plagueing swedish and american charts the past year, will subside soon though, as it's just a little bit older than the deadmau5 pluck. The patterns may persist, but the shift in sound will be for basses with more lp filtering. not softer, just thuddier and punchy basses instead of raw and screeching basses.
But Electro will never die. It will only transform into something new that will once again blow our collective minds.

I was a bit taken aback when Avicii's song "Wake Me Up" hit #1 on the Billboard charts last month.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcrbM1l_BoI

I'm one of the few people in this area that even knew who he was. People don't even know how to pronounce the name.

I don't really like Avicii's style, too happy, fluffy, and cute. It has a childlike quality to it. He is talented for sure, ain't gonna diss him. Some of his song choices for Levels are interesting, in a good way. His music is easy for the masses to digest. Yep it sells, that's why his style is emulated.

I see nothing wrong with producing what is popular at the moment, especially if you want to sell and license tracks or get gigs. For every light fluffy track you make, you can make a darker one. The best of both worlds.
