I`m going to be honest with you TS, back in December and the start of Summer, Paul was playing too much progressive, something I HATED WITH A PASSION. He would start his sets with 2 hours, building it up then turning into his trancey side. I got to see him play like this in March 29, 2002 @ NewYork and his first 2 hours where so boring. I was almost sleeping on the dancefloor due to the lack of energy of the tracks... when suddenly, Goldenscan`s 'Sunrise' came on and everybody was awaken

anyways... PvD plays better in Europe than he does in USA unfortunately.

many greetings,

f0x

It has so much to do with his personality: he's a guy who likes family, friends, home. I guess he just feels more comfortable playing in Europe.

Like I said "If I am there while he spins, I would go nuts too"
But he just lacks the ability to create journey atmospheres, and this is because of the tunes he plays, too cheesy for journeys IMO.
And again don't take this offensive.

And with atmospheres I mean here the music itself not when u'r at a party and hear the crowd going nuts.
A good Dj is not someone who mixes fluently a couple of tracks into eachother but one that creates a Journey by his ability of superb track selecting, and thats what I call skillz!
PVD has skillz to make people jump, but not to create journeys...

And hey guys, don't hate me for saying this, it's just my opinion on PVD, convince me that he's a brilliant dj, I did't make this thread to flame, just want a good discussion.
Personally his playing style just doesn't fit on me.
Neither does Gielen and Corsten, similar dj's.
I got respect for him but convince me that he creates awsome journeys... (you can't huh )
I got one set of him that is actually "good" and that's
paul van dyk - essential mix Live at Home London (23.04.2000)
(except from darude then....)

Alot of the people coming to gigs, no matter who the DJ is WILL go
nuts just becuase they are there and they have a DJ spinning just
infront of them. I remember one of Timo Maas's sets at Cream where
they interview two girls who are screaming that they got tickets
to cream and that its gonna be wiiicked, nothing wrong in it, i would
be going bananas if i had tickets too but the point is that if you
have such a good idea about how its going to be, then the dj can do
much about everything before he has fucked up for good.

If PVD just spins tracks without trainwrecking all the time and dont
spin all that dark shit that just contains of beats and tribals then
he will get away with it, so will every DJ.
But if you have a real fan there who is expecting the DJ to read his
mind and to spin just the right tracks and instead gets delievered
a bunch of tunes that don't match the mood at all, well then its
pretty much fucked.

What Im trying to say is that there is a difference between people
and people. People that go there to have a good time and listen to
some music and people who go there which have been following their
specific musicstyle and perhaps the dj himself/herself for a time
and knows how he/she wants to be touched, what tracks and what
kind of music he/she wants to hear to be taken on that journey that
we all wants to go on.

But I know for a fact that I would be going out of my mind If I got
to hear Oakie play, no matter what he played.
