This is actually something I'm pondering right now; I've been on battery 3 which was my go to for many years but now I've done a format to mavericks, I'm starting from fresh.

I'm thinking Battery 4 but don't really know what else is out there?

I just want something that holds samples as cells so I can trigger it from my keyboard or electribe.

Any suggestions?

Battery 4 is a huge upgrade. There are some workflow changes that will seriously piss you off for a while, such as the sample browser no longer having folders/files split into two panes or empty cells no longer being highlighted when you play a note. However, the new effects system is amazing. I basically do everything within Battery now.

I don't think there are any good alternatives to Battery. You could try Geist, but meh.

Battery 4, Geist, Xfer Nerve, Linplug RMV, MOTU BPM (ick), or Maschine if you also want a controller.

Personally, I'd go with Battery 4 or Nerve if I was you.

cryo put me onto Nerve a while back and it's pretty much all I use for drums. I use its on board samples and import a few from Wave Alchemy and a couple other packs.

Only annoying things is it's an 8 step sequencer by default and I've never found a way of expanding this so I end up making several different sets of beats (say 1 thu 8) and then having to join them all with automation.

All in all my best ever purchase.

I'm also still on Battery 3, but I've had some bugs give me grief on occasions, though since I did the last update some time back it seems to be more stable.
I also use a few drum synths, record and make a lot of my own samples as I really enjoy being at the creative crux of my work most of the time. I also have a few custom kits created by sound designers I respect and also a few Kontakt and Wave Alchemy libraries.

If Live's drum racks could be used inside other hosts I'd probably stick with that as I like the simplicity and some of the features, notably the way you can insert a sampler loaded with different sounds on each cell. Then map the selection parameter inside the sampler to a macro so you can change the sample in real time with a knob. It's pretty neat but requires a bit of RAM if you put in a shit load of samples.
