What mixer are you using? Ideally by having all the frequency filters on no sound should be audible. I think this is one of things to look for when buying a mixer. Or maybe you only have cuts that don't go to infinity? I don't know...My own mixer is a real piece of shite and doesn't have any of these features!

Just use the phono/line switch and you should be fine!
