I've thought about dropping everything and going after it before. But if I had a mortgage or family, there's no way I'd risk it.

People like Avicii buying mansions worth 15 mil.
Ability to do business >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>talent. Talent still helps obviously. If you got lots of talent you can find businessmen willing to invest in you, like labels that have more than 1 employee.

"Real" musicians? Charles Ives is considered a genius by some. Had a day job as a salesmen all his life. Wise choice for groundbreaking paradigm shifting pretentious wankers.

Its funny how there is no optimism at all, rightfully of course. Whats worse is the content-farmers doing online labels, people really have no shame or spine.

Personally wasn't thinking of making a living as an artist (that would be the dream of course but does seem extremely unlikely). More along the lines of: producing demos for singers, producing for djs, producing bands, mixing other people's tracks, sound design for tv/film, music for games/TV/apps, songwriting, teaching production, teaching an instrument. A lot of those would take years and years to achieve L
There's no point in me chucking in my job (which is pretty good in a lot of respects) unless its for doing the thing im most passionate about

If you think beat port is an actual market , well you've made an assumption that has guided your marketing strategy based on something that is merely a System to rank djs.

There is more money in more peoples pockets than There ever has been. Can you make money, no idea but I see certain things ie selling your self as a producer, releasing only singles and then expecting to make money on that alone , not gonna happen.

It won't happen in trance if that is you're genre. Hip-hop is where it's at money wise in the production game. The guy who got me started in production even though I produce trance and dabble in reggaeton and latin music, is an underground hip hop producer occasionally putting out trap/drill/crunk...etc mainstream crap if the pay is right. He sells beats for up to 500$ sometimes and makes about 1-2 grand a month. he lives in a 1 bedroom trailer, works PT at taco bell to supplement it, and tweaks on aderall not sleeping for 2-3 days just working on beats cause he has to constantly be spamming shit out to stay afloat. Why not take that time an effort to go to school where he can get a career with a guranteed salary and less work? He loves what he's doing like it's his child and you should too. Only the front half of the top 100 DJmag DJ's are considerably wealthy, and only the other 50 and maybe a few outliers make enough off sales and gigging alone to survive. All the guys you see living it up either own or co own VERY succesful record labels or have their hands in other investments.

lots of cynical butthurt in this thread, almost worse than gearslutz but that seems more like those already in the industry trying to dissuade the younger folk from taking over their territory

Hi all,

In my experience, I still have may day job as a system administrator, however I'm making some money working in the studio. Not with trance and my releases, they are still a hobby and the money is not there unless you get signed by a MAJOR label and if you dj or perform live to get big gigs.
But now I'm working for another producer who makes megamixes for gym and fitness routines. In this case I make high energy remixes of well known pop/rock/commercial songs I'm also producing a rock band and working in their first album helping develop their own style and reach the sound they want and another thing that makes me earn some money is to make backtracks for singers who performs live with no band.

I repeat this is not so good money to live for, but I hope in the future makes this my daily job and quit to this boring IT work...

LOL. I'm sure this is why the big hiphop names do EDM now.
