During the early and mid 2000's, Oakenfold was the closest thing America had to what we would now understand to be a producer/DJ 'EDM' popstar. 'Bunkka' had just been released, and tracks like 'Ready, Steady, Go' and 'Starry Eyed Surprise' were hugely successful pop hits over here, seeing play in commercials and major Hollywood films (not to mention being commissioned for work on soundtracks like 'Swordfish' and 'Die Another Day').
I think it was easier for him to cement that type of mainstream reputation at the time in which he did, and was even able to appeal to the the prevailing hip hop and R&B sound that had dominated only until recently (with collaborations with people like Ice Cube and Nelly Furtado). But now names like Deadmau5 and Skrillex have made a norm out of that status, and it seems as though Oakenfold is struggling to assert himself among those names and with a generation that just doesn't care.
I will say this, though: despite his commercial success, he always seemed to have one foot planted firmly in the 'underground,' and tracklists like this were typical of the ongoing radio show he was assembling on a weekly basis during this height of his mainstream popularity:
2003-12-07
01. Karada - Last Flight (Markus Schulz Return To Coldharbour Remix)
02. Planet Heaven - Where Are We Going (Hi Road Mix)
03. Kate Bush vs Infusion - Running Up That Hill
04. Prince - When Dubs Cry (Bill Hamel & Matt Fitzwater Remix)
05. Situation 2wo - Way2tite (Marco Bellini & Van Weller Feel The Pressure Remix)
06. Pat Foosheen - Zion (Original Mix)
07. Sonorous - Second Sun (Leama & Moor Remix)
08. Starkid - Crayons (Scribbling on the Walls Mix)
09. Garbage - Stupid Girl (Leama & Moor Bootleg Mix)
10. X Men vs 808 - State Kuebic
11. Dove Beat - La Paloma (Power Dove Remix)
12. Medway - Trauma (Original Bassline)
13. OMB - Whiteroom
14. Matt Brown - Unknown
TA actually has a complete archive of all his Party 93.1 tracklists, many of which have ID's that have been there for years:

Great post, especially with the historical insight to actually what it was like with the transatlantic divide during this period.
People don't realise that his dance tracks were getting played as feature pieces in major syndicated TV shows like JJ Abrams' Alias etc.
He was also really the first (and for many years the only) DJ who had actually got in to the score game. Every other EDM dweeb since then has thought they could do, and just as Oakenfold found out, it aint that easy, but he did pull it off.

No didn't miss it all. Just because you say something is not "good" doesn't make it so, I'm afraid.

Anyway RANN, it's been well established that you sling objectivity out of the window when it comes to Oakey, probably because he soundtracked some of your nascent pill experiences circa 1997.
|
Ipso facto; Because, unlike you, I actually experienced his sets at the time when trance was at it's absolute peak, I am somewhat rather more qualified to give a real measure on this. Don't take my word for it. Let's not forget those magazine you constantly reference from the time; MixMag, IDJ and DJ all crowned 1998 as the Year of trance, with Oakenfold as not just one of the major players and founders.

I told you then and I'll tell you again, that thread was a thinly veiled troll (if you also remember, I was stating that Oakenfold invented trance - you should have clicked right there and then). Regardless though, in the dozen or so times I saw him between 1995 and 2001, I actually never heard him trainwreck. I have no commodity in arguing either way, it's would make no difference to me either way whether he had or hadn't, but it's just that I never heard him do it. It's also not like I'm some uneducated rave punter that doesn;t know the difference.
But don't take my word for it. Many of those times I heard him play, were Essential Mixes. I may be wrong, but even a few of them I owned, there weren't any trainwrecks.

So, let me get this right: You weren't there for any of these (as it was all well before your time) but you know this subject better than me because you're a member of a facbook group or people who were apparently there?

To me he just represents that sort of oldness the scene seems to have, Those guys that just need to accept he had a good go and move on. Can't 'blame him. Was he a nice guy before the drugs and super star thing. I suppose most people are. His google return is enough to say you lived. |
Lol, this is all quite true, but don't forget it take a single mindedness and ruthless self belief to achieve that level of success in any field.
That shit just doesn't switch off when you go out of vogue. See Burt Reynolds for more information.

Yeah thanks. Welcome to the world of music discussion. Just listing that he made a lot of singles and some of them sold a lot of copies is not going to convince me that the likes of Faster Pussycat are anything less than absolute dross, cheers.

Interesting argument. I'd like you to cite where exactly I've "referenced" IDJ or DJ Mag for a start, and do take your time because the next ice age isn't due for a while. Secondly this is a very scenic route to demonstrating some sort of point - so a clutch of music magazines declared a certain year "the year of trance" and Oakenfold was a "major player" in that. Firstly: citation needed. Again, take your time. Secondly, does this suddenly make Oakenfold a good mixer? A good producer? Or merely someone who relentlessly pushed a certain en vogue sound as it entered commercial ascendency? Oakenfold's only real achievement throughout his career is taking things that other people invented - Balearic, goa, trance - and popularising them through canny marketing and promotion strategies. Impressive in a business sense perhaps, but not so much in an artistic of musical sense.

1. Citation needed.
2. You should be friends with Nou.

I'd say a large number of observers are more reliable than one, I'd say that actually I have heard Oakey fuck up on numerous recorded mixes (he even fucked up massively on both his Global Underground comps, which is some feat on a commercially released CD) and I'd even say that being "there at the time" is actually massively overrated when it comes to historical accuracy. In the past you've claimed to have never heard of "tech-step" before I mentioned the term despite you being a regular clubber in London in the mid-90s (don't make me pull the clippings and citations of the term being used in that time) and nary six months ago you expressed bafflement that X-Press 2 were playing at a Cream Reunion because Cream wasn't "their territory" despite them holding a residency there in 1997 (again, do you really want me to pull out the archives?)
You can call back on the I TROLL YOU card if you so wish but unless you encountered some miracle run of flawless Oakenfold livesets I'd say you were too bollocksed, too starstruck, too forgetful or just plain didn't have the ear to know any better. Oakenfold was a gash mixer and everyone knows it.
