let it be. the overall sound of today is bad enough as it is, i would appricate if people starting releasing unmastered music. just the raw wav with plenty of headroom and no compression. my ears would cry of joy. whenever i hear a mp3 song today i cry of sadness. it sounds shit. all dynamics is dead. i can listen to my own productions for hours without getting tired. one song on spotify and i need a break. |
I too wish we all could go back to music that's not so compressed. I just loaded up a Rush song from the early 80's, 'YYZ', and visually it appears that all the dynamics were left intact. My favorite Kraftwork song, 'Numbers', is like that as well, the second half is visually louder than the last half. Rightly so, because a lead is added that last half. These 2 songs have probably been remastered, but they are still very "quiet" compared to today's pumped up music.
Elton John's 'Rocket Man' peaks at -0.8db. That would be considered insanely quiet these days. Visually, the wave looks like a dwarf, just because I'm not used to seeing that. I would be happy to release music that hasn't been compressed or limited, but it couldn't compete in today's market. I do think EQ is still needed on the master channel, to roll off the extreme highs and lows.
LANDR makes tracks loud, but you can change the settings to where it won't be as loud. If you sign up you can choose, high, medium, low, or whatever. Anyway, besides making tracks loud, I don't know what else LANDR is doing. Not even sure if it's limiting, normalizing, or what. I won't use it for that reason. My mastering is simple, but at least I know what I've done.
