I opted for the dance scene because I got way too much Kappa in my closet

I'd like to be philosophical and explore both sides, but I'm lazy so I'll just stick to supporting the rave image.

Anyway, if you think about other images, such as rap, or pop what the artists sell is an image. The rap fans of someone like Nelly, all wear big chains, something on their head, and pants that go lower than their knees. There is also a cultural aspect of the image. The fans try to hit on the dozens of girls that Nelly hits on, and they try to earn lots of money like Nelly has.

Some of what I have said is steriotypical but I'm just look at the average fan.

Well anyway, for someone like a raver, we dont try to "Visit the magical castles in the sky", or dress and learn german like our Gods do.

We just be ourselves and enjoy what they bring to us. Not assimilated into anything.

you can't say that hip hop has more emphasis on imgage, cause you're only looking at the mainstream (mtv and stuff).

and to add to that, every scene also has the exceptions. People who like the music, but don't dress in the image.

I'm sure there are just as many clothing companies capitalizing on the "raver" image as there are on the "thugged out" image.

definitly, ive seen stores for "Rave" clothes were a buttoned shirt was 90 dollers and i could not find 1 pair of pants under 100 (most were about 150 BEFORE tax)

I agree and disagree that the electronic music scene isn't image conscious.

I would defiently say that more pop genres of "culture" tend to be more concerned with creating imaging that SELLS. For the most part pop artists like Eminem, Nelly, N'snyc are all about an IMAGE and far less concerend about their "product". Although the product (music) has as much to do with their image than the way they look and act.

Think about those reality "making the band"/"popstars" shows. In the end, the process shows that, as much, or more time is taken to making the artist(s) look and act right as practicing and perfecting their music.

To say that the electronic music scene is not concerned about image I think is a little naive. But also easier to understand on this side of the world where pop culture is more concerned with hip pop and rock music; not dance music.

The "SupaStar" DJ as Tiesto has said is a rock star. Traveling constantly get big named billing and promation will do that for ya no matter what industry you are in. Creating a particular style that is unique and "sellable" is very important to some of then I'm SURE. Not all of em I know, but just because Armin is a down to earth friendly guy it doesn't mean he isn't concerned about presenting himself to the world in a certain way.

When I was in England this summer I came across a store called "Cyberdog" and it was a big store with all this raver clothes, all quite expensive too. Some of it was pretty cool, like these shirts with lights on the front that flicker with the music. You see, over there, the electronic music scene overcame the rock thing a long time ago (turntables were outselling guitars in the UK years ago). What I see is that as a genre gets bigger, it becomes more image associated. For instance, sub-cultures like the punk movement in the 80s and the grunge/seattle thing of the early 90s were born out of a reaction to the more image oriented music that preceded them..but it only took a few years before everybody in 1993/94 was wearing dock martins, plaid shirts, and ripped jeans to be grungy like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The difference in the electronic music scene IMO is that it's been around for a while but it never seems to catch the mainstream like other genres have. I suppose many would argue that trance isn't mainstream now with all the big clubs hosting trance djs and all the superstar clubs and festivals in Europe and I suppose that's true aswell. It's definitely not like that here though.
