Amazon MP3s are VBR quality, so if you think you're going to play the tracks out on a good soundsystem you probably want the 320-or-better of Beatport. Personally I do buy most tracks on Amazon MP3, especially stuff for my ambient sets. Chill out DJs don't get to play on top spec soundsystems.

Obviously, they make more money this way, but bandwith is so cheap these days that charging anything extra for lossless is a joke. It's a practice from last decade that somehow made it's way into 2014.
Bandcamp gives you whatever format you want for the same price and i'm very happy that more and more labels are using them, the only advantage that Beatport has is that their storefront is much better for digging and keeping up with new releases.

Storage is expensive. I have run into issues with storage costs for my own company (i do genomics work) that made me realize how every bit counts as far as storage is concerned. Its probably why amazon doesn't sell lossless actually, since it would cut into their margin.
If they do sell lossless though (ie. Beatport), it's stored on their servers anyways.
Amazon sells vbr because regular people don't care or don't want lossless. Don't they run the Azure cloud service? I doubt they'd care about a bit of extra data from their music service. I wouldn't be surprised if they have the lossless they receive from the labels still lying around somewhere anyways.

This is a great point.. I still wonder how much of that actually goes to the artist. The whole thing seems like a total racket to me

Yeah, it still seems to be working. I've used it four times now.
I wanted to buy a bunch of progressive songs from 2003-2007 but I couldn't because out of the 24 hours I couldn't really make a decent search after work. Next year, maybe.
