I agree, this probably the biggest motivator of all when it comes to the additional "telemetry" data Win 10 is sending to various MS-owned domains. But, still, the old/get-off-my-lawn conspiracy nut in me can't help but wonder what else MS has baked into 10 to assist certain 3-letter organizations. Again, I have no evidence whatsoever to support this other than my Spideysenses tingling.

The reason they're dicontinuing 8.1 is that it was a steaming pile of shit.
It couldn't decide if it was tablet OS a laptop OS or a deskptop OS and managed to fuck up the experience on each platform because of the others.

Windows 10 what 8.1 should have been (and M$ have even now admitted that).
Every OS these days is designed to peddle their own wares. OSX does, Android Does, Windows always has, and due to the laws monopolies and anti-trust (which microsoft have fallen foul of many times), they are easy as shit to switch off. In fact you can disable all the M$ options during installation with about a dozen click switches.
Windows 10 is the best OS since XP, and M$ know it which i why we won't see another OS from them in at least another decade.

I upgraded to 10 a couple days ago and have enjoyed it so far; it was quite easy to turn off many of the features I didn't want.
I can't finish solving one problem when a new one arises. Just yesterday the taskbar froze after the displays were off. Now I have to figure out why and then by the time I solve that I will have to deal with a new issue.
I'd rather use 8.1, which has been stabilized for my PC for awhile now, than to continue troubleshooting W10. That thing has been scary and unstable since it's Beta testing.
I will continue to hold as much as possible in other laptops until W10 changes its philosophy on privacy and update settings. Those things are ridiculous. The latest release of Fedora is by far more practical than W10. When one has to do less troubleshooting for a linux distro than for a windows release, that says a lot about both.

I'm in the same position. I don't know quite know what you're doing sensorium, but if Linux is easier that w10, you're definitely not doing it right.
10 is built on the backbone of 8.1 without the cluster fuck of trying to be 3 different os's.

so after reading this thread i finally bit the bullet and upgraded. very happy with it (which mostly means yes, all my games run fine ). i also like some of the slightly modified options, like being able to increase the size of the UI on the fly to suit my TV. looks like im back to winamp though; ditched 'groove' due to lack of drag and drop (wtf microsoft??).

Winamp is one of the first programs I install after any OS refresh.

Finally did the upgrade and feels much smoother. 8.1 was pretty terrible, reminds me of a modern Windows ME. My laptop always felt sluggish with 8.1 and can tell immediate difference overall.
