i think kai tracid - tracid theme, is a great opener to a set, but i dont use it tho...
....also, solar quest - acid air raid, (both mixes) are great too, but theyre both for sorta harder sets

I disagree. I think this is too long and too boring to start a set with. Rank 1 did it and although the track is cool, the intro is to damn long. It would literally make me walk out the club before the climax came in.
I would have to agree with michif72 on Katana's intro mix to Cristalle. That is so sick! It would hit the spot by warming up the crowd and setting off the night with pure energy!

Aria one - Willow (DJ Tiesto's Magikal Remake)
or even BT - Flaming June (PvD Remix)

there are probably 2 rules to an opening track: (1) keep it simple and (2) keep it interesting.
Simple, meaning nothing with elaborate melodies, dramatic breakdowns or complex structure, nor anything too long.
Intersting, meaning something that catches the listener's attention. If it's a demo, then you'll want to put something really banging (but simple) at the front. If it's a mix CD to listen to at home, then something more subtle, not too obvious.
Some tracks that could be used in these two categories are
subtle:
G Pal - Ocean Of Blue
Bent - Always (Ashley Beedle Remix)
bangin:
Junkie XL - Future In Computer Hell Pt 2
Dariush - Ira

I think that one is better as a closer - the ending is just soooo beautiful...
