Yesh! Carl Cox live at Crobar is bad-ass! He plays with the songs and keeps his shit really entertaining.

As for Tranceport, it's not a live set and should be clean to the point of perfection. However you put it, he still had to something. The program isnt going to mix every track to perfection, or else we'd all be big-name DJ's

One of my favorite CDs of all time is DJ Micro's Tech Mix Live from Avalon. The track selection is awesome and mixing is pretty close to mint. He's a great DJ in my opinion, might not be the greatest producer, but he's got great taste in music!

I think there's more to it than just throwing a list of tracks into the mixer program and letting it pump out a flawless mix. Even if it beatmatches perfectly, how does it know when to fade in and out to make the proper effect? What sounds good for one transition may sound god-awful for another, and I don't think software can tell the difference. MixMeister has a so-called auto-mix feature but 99% of the time it's crap because it just crossfades the last 10 seconds of the track or some crap like that. Speaking of which, does anyone know some good DJ software they could recommend? I like the way you can physically manipulate the waveforms in MixMeister but you can't separate the tracks into channels which is a real bummer. (Technically they have "bass" volume and "treble" volume, but that's not the same as having hi's, lo's and mid's at your disposal.)

I hate to break it to you guys, but ALMOST every compilation mix out there is digital. The only DJ who is known to make them all live is Tiesto. With Oakey I'm not sure, because even tho his mixes sound like they were done on comp sometimes, the record surface noise is always on his recordings. If you read the notes on the box of GU: 007 New York it says "This recording was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the dj and therefore contains characteristics of that sound medium, such as record surface noise". PvD and Sasha and Digs all definitely use computers, their compilations are just so smooth its unbelievable. I guess it's easier to tell if you spin yourself cuz then you know what playing live really sounds like.

Here's the easiest way to tell if it's live or not: When the dj is mixing, listen to the bass beats. If at any time when they are mixing the bass starts sounding a little inconsistent, like some kicks are stronger than others, its cuz when you mix live the bass frequencies clash and sometimes cancel each other out. If you don't hear that happen at all and the bass beats are always perfect, even when mixing (IE Politic's of Dancing), than it was done on a computer.

What's this business about the computer doing all the mixing for you. That's completly not the case. It's not like you load up 10 tracks and sit back while it mixes them. The big deal with computer programs is the fact that you dont have to worry so much about keeping each track in sync with the other. With a Digital mixing program you can monitor the beat of each track and lock the tempo in on each. Pretty much everything else about the mixing is up to the Dj. When you start the qued track, how you use the eq and fade in are done just as you would do it with real gear.

That's why i like Tiesto mix compilations more than any other. They all have that raw, warm, live sound of vinyl. I bet audiophiles would notice.

Just a matter of taste, computer mixes are not easy to do at all. Working with stuff like pro-tools is not that simple. But still, it will turn out flat at the end. That's why I like live-sets better, they're just more real.

but as far as tranceport 1?

He admitted it though (hence why it says 'DIGITALLY MIXED BY MATT DAREY' on the cover of Ibiza Euphoria 1 and Pure Euprhoia 4). Even if he didn't you could tell. How did he get the vocals from 'Heaven's Earth' over 'Welcome to the Dance' and 'Shine' with 'You put me in heaven with you touch' so perfectly?
