Excelon is right, most clubs have Rane mixers and you can only hear one track at a time in the headphones so if you ever wanna get outta your room your gonna have to learn 1 ear on 1 ear off

monitors...cant go wrong with klipsch or tannoy : P love them... klipsh is warmer and tannoys alittle more balanced. plus... dual concentric...they are a dream to hear

my speakers REALLY REALLY SUCK, so i have to do it with both cups on. i actually hate it, cause i know i am not going to be able to use that way @ a gig. i find it REALLY REALLY HARD to have both tracks on my phones when volume is loud. I NEED NEW SPEAKERS+monitors i guess.

i agree that it's much better to listen to the speakers with one ear so that you hear what the crowd hears, but i also think it's much easier that way (most people say it's easier with both cups on). it feels to me more balanced though when i have one cup off... (that does not make me a professional though...)

I take it that you have never DJed live in a decent sized club with a loud sound system. the only reason the DJ's use the one cup method is because of the sound levels. If you covered both ears in a club it would be impossible to distingush between the tracks. All you would hear is the bass from the monitors/house system. They have the cued up song in the cup on the ear.... and with the bigger systems they cannot even hear the bass beat from the headphone as you would DJing in your room. they go by all other things that are able to be picked apart.... ie high hats etc. My point is, there is no "professional" way vs ameture way. They do it because it is a necessity to listen that way where the sound systems are 40,000 watt plus.

I thought split-cueing was "not professional" and a bit of a cheat? That's what I've read on these forums....

Personally, here's how I mix: I use one ear to cue up the incoming track. Once I got it where I want it to be, I bring it in so that both tracks are playing at max line volume, then I take off my headphones -- yes, completely off, to hear how the actual mix turns out. Then I finish by fading out the first track.

I've found out that if you keep one ear in the headphones all the time during the actual transition, that can cause minor problems. The actual transition may be a little "bumpier" so you have to catch it and correct it on the fly.

I do the same thing, but with the track that i'm gonna mix in, I have it a tad bit louder in the headphones. And to make sure that it's mixing perfect i'll play both tracks in the headphones at the same level.
Now as for what point do i start mixing... The track i'm going to mix in, i'll cue it up right when the drums start (where the kicks come in... not hi-hats..s/p?? lol). Then i'll start to mix it in when the track that's playing has finished its chorus or high point.

Every track has 4 beats. If you are good enough to figure when 1 starts then after goes 2 3 4. So what i do is i put 1 cup on my ear then at the start of every vinyl there is #1 beat everytime, so when you hear #1 beat on the live song then u throw #1 on the cue at the same time and mixes them everytime. Hard to get the pitch right (I still have problems with that).

Really?.....I do the same thing.....we're not backwards.....everybody else is!!!!.....

I actually also take my headphones totally off when im starting the
transition. Otherwise it feels as if i might be "cheated", that i wont
hear all the details or whatever.. just makes me feel more secure.

Guess I wanna hear that live sound instead of the cupsound.
